Cancer

Overview

Cancer pertains to a large group of diseases wherein there is an abnormal growth of cells or group of cells inside the body. This abnormal growth in the body is also known as cancer cells or malignant cells. For animals and human beings, cells are the main components of the body. When the body requires it, the normal cells in the body will multiply. Cancer is caused when there is no need for it, the cells die; or when the cells or group of cells in the body grow out of control and multiply at an abnormal rate. In some cases, cancer occurs when the cells fail to die and continue to divide and multiply inside the body.

There are numerous types of cancers which develop in various parts of the body, including organs like the lungs, breast, nerve tissues, skin, colon, bones, and many others.

Causes

Cancer can be caused by exposure to chemicals like Benzene, and toxins like aflatoxins and exposure to poisonous plants like mushrooms. Exposure to radiation is also known to cause cancer. It can also be caused by unhealthy habits such as excessive alcohol consumption. Excessive exposure to sunlight is one of the main causes of skin cancer. Certain viruses are also known to cause different types of cancer. Aside from external factors, genetic problems and health issues like obesity are the most common causes of cancer in most patients.

Types

In the United States alone, prostate cancer, colon cancer, and lung cancer are the most common types of cancer in men. For women, lung cancer, colon cancer, and breast cancer are the top 3 in cancer-related deaths in the United States.

Aside from the above mentioned, the other types of cancer are: cervical cancer, cancer of the kidneys, liver cancer, ovarian cancer, testicular cancer, uterine cancer, brain cancer, lymphoma (Hodgkin’s disease), leukemia, skin cancer, and thyroid cancer.

Symptoms

Depending on the type of cancer, and the location of the growth in the body, the symptoms may vary in intensity and frequency. For lung cancer, the most common symptoms include prolonged coughing, chest pains, and shortness of breath. Diarrhea, blood in stools, and constipation are some of the common symptoms in colon cancer. In other types of cancers, there may not be any symptoms until the later stages of the disease. For most types of cancers, chills, fevers, severe loss of appetite and weight loss, fatigue, and malaise are common symptoms.

Treatment

The treatment for cancer depends on the type and the current stage upon diagnosis. The stages of cancer indicate the growth of the cancer cells and how far it has already spread from the origin. If detected in its early stage, cancer can be treated with surgery to remove the growth, especially if it has not spread to other areas. If the cancer cells have already spread and surgery cannot be done to remove the growth, chemotherapy or radiation are the two most recommended options. While treating cancer can be tough for most patients, it is also important to know how to maintain body strength to endure the process of treatment.
